Kelly gang gun to go under the hammer

9 November 2007

A unique piece of Australian history will be unveiled in Melbourne today.

Several years ago, a man found a gun belonging to Ned Kelly's sister Kate hidden in her former family home in Forbes in New South Wales.

The revolver bears the initials "K.K" and was found wrapped in leather strapping and covered in lard.

It is now up for sale at an auction on Tuesday.

Mossgreen Auction Director Paul Sumner says it was a rare and exciting find.

"In America, it would be equivalent to finding Jesse James' gun," he said.

Mr Sumner says Kate Kelly is known to have been part of the Kelly gang and would take food to her brothers.

"We don't know but this gun may well have been used by one of her brothers as well," he said.
