Amendments to the Firearms Act 2017

We have just received the text of the amendments to the Firearms Act and the accompanying Explanatory Memorandum outlining these proposed amendments. The first examination of it suggests that there is nothing in the changes that affects collectors as a specific group, while the general aim appears to be towards tightening up on illegal usage and possession and increasing the powers of the Chief Commissioner. We will be further reviewing these changes and will advise members accordingly.

TENURE; Position offers security and chance of advancement.

JOB SATISFACTION; Offers potential of achieving aspirations.

At the risk of sounding like a cracked record – I again ask that Members consider joining the Committee.

Our achievements to date include success in putting a strong case forwards in ameliorating the onerous elements of the N.F.A. affecting Collectors.

The current challenge ahead of us is to have antique multi – shot percussion pistols removed from the requirement to be registered under the Firearms Act.

My concern is that the Guild’s efforts fall upon too few shoulders. Even more concerning is the potential for the future, as current Guild Officers “fall off the twig”.

Apart from success in the multiple-shot percussion area; I would feel very heartened if my tenure also saw a strong Committee, supporting a vibrant Guild, going forward.

To echo Lord Kitchener’s call:-“Your Guild Needs You!”.

Kind regards to all,

Eric W. Estlin.
