Very Light Magazine is a magazine of The Antique & Historical Arms Collectors Guild of Victoria, Inc.                                                                          No 56 August 2011

Guild Annual General Meeting

At the Annual General Meeting held on the 25th of July the committee was elected.

President, Ian Turner, Vice-President, Dr. Ben Thomas, Secretary, Dr Malcolm McKay, Asst. Secretary, Steve Tuck; Treasurer, Tim Parker; Editor, Barry Thomas; Committee Members; Chris Cosopodiotis, Graham Waddingham, Kevin Saunders, Peter Ruse, Winston Chandler, and Adrian Roads.

Winner of the Major Noel Hall Award

The winner of the Major Noel Hall was announced at the Annual General Meeting. The winner was Neville Leaf who accepted a cheque for $500.00. Neville’s award was well deserved as he had presented consistently good displays on the range of subjects selected. The President thanked everyone who had presented displays because these have really brightened up our regular Monday meeting and we look forward to seeing a similar standard of displays for the 2011- 2012 calendar.

Monday Themes for 2011

The following are the themes and dates for the Monday night meetings in 2011.
Aug. 29 – Buy and sell night (books, spares, arms bric-a-brac etc., (Note ammunition and registerable firearms can only be offered for sale by a suitably licensed dealer). This is not a Major Noel Hall Trophy night.
Sept. 26 Colts and Remingtons
Oct. 31 – James Rosier and other Melbourne dealer marked arms. This is not a Major Noel Hall Trophy night.
There will also be a talk given by Committee member Dr Ben Thomas on James Rosier.
Nov. 28- Combined Vintagers/Guild Night – Vintage Sporting Guns and Rifles – Not in Retirement (supper provided). This is not a Major Noel Hall Trophy night.

Please note that even though we have set themes for certain nights we encourage members who have something of interest which may not be related to the particular theme to bring it or them along. Likewise, we also encourage members to bring along items for sale as this adds variety (ammunition and registerable firearms can only be offered for sale by a suitably licensed dealer).
Display Conditions and Permits

We encourage those members who are individually named in the Guild’s Current Display Permit (24th July 2009 to 17th July 2014) (or who hold their own applicable display permit) to take the opportunity to make use of it. It covers all the firearms held on the Collectors Licence(s) of the member listed. We set out the Guild’s Display Permit conditions below.

Members who have items registered to an Antique Handgun Collectors Licence do not need a permit to display these, so to increase the variety at our Monday nights why not bring some of them along.

Collectors Display Permits do not apply to items held under A & B licences. However, such items must not be possessed, carried or used other than in accordance with any licence conditions and the Firearms Act.

Display Permits are not required for displays of Exempt Firearms, such as pre 1900 manufactured single barrelled muzzle-loading pistols, or pre 1900 manufactured longarms (which are either muzzle-loading or take ammunition which is no longer commercially available).

Of course, Guild Displays are not limited to firearms. There is always a lot of interest in displays of militaria, edged weapons, items relating to wars or battles involving Australians and other historical matters of interest to members.

Talk on the Battle of Pozieres

The MHSA Victorian Branch Inc. will present a talk on 25th August 2011 at the Oakleigh-Carnegie RSL, 95-97 Drummond Street Oakleigh at 8 pm. on the Battle of Pozieres by Scott Bennett author of Pozieres: The Anzac Story. This is a joint night with the Australian Great War Association. Scott will have copies of his book available at the presentation.

A gold coin entry donation will be very welcome, and the Branch will hold its usual militaria raffle.
