No.45 - June 2009

At Last! A Guild Buy and Sell Night including Firearms! Roly Martyn to the Rescue!

Note the date, which is 29th June 2009

Because only firearms dealers can offer licensable firearms for sale at our meetings we have arranged with long-term Guild Committee member and well-known dealer in antique arms, Roland Martyn, for him to act as agent for members wishing to sell licenced firearms at the 29th of June 2009 Guild Buy and Sell Night.

Roly has very kindly agreed to do this free of commission (except for the usual fee on registering a transfer of ownership after the permit to acquire has been obtained).

The procedure is as follows:

Only Guild Members may participate.

Members wanting to sell firearms need to bring to the meeting the firearms they would like to sell, together with the applicable certificate of registration/ firearms list showing the firearm and the member as registered owner, no later than 8pm on the night. We will open at 6.30pm so first come, first served.

There will be a limit of 4 firearms per proposed seller.

Roly will enter the firearms in his books up until 8pm when the hall will be opened to all members.

Firearms agreed to be sold will be retained by Roly but those not agreed to be sold will be booked out by Roly after the meeting closes for sales at 9.30pm.

All guns booked in must be booked out before leaving the hall.

The hall will be closed at 10pm.

Firearm Security requirement specified by Roly must be complied with Roly’s word is law concerning all aspects of his involvement.

This is a really excellent opportunity, buyers and sellers, so don’t let it slip by- come along!

The Annual General Meeting of the Guild will be held at 8.00 PM on Monday the 27th of July 2009 at the Eley Park Community Centre, Eley Rd., Blackburn South, Victoria.

(Supper will be served after the meeting)

Any notice of motions and nominations for committee positions must be in the hands of the Secretary seven days prior to the date of the Annual General Meeting. All Committee positions will be declared vacant and nominations are called for the position (s) of President, Vice President, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Editor of Caps & Flints, Media Officer and five other officers.

Ordinary Business (as required by Rule 9 (4) of the Guilds Rules):

To receive from the Committee reports upon the transactions of the Guild during the last preceding financial year;

To elect officers of the Guild; and

To receive and consider the statement submitted by the Guild in accordance with section 30 (3) of the Act;

To appoint an Auditor.

The annual General Meeting may also transact special business of which notice is given in accordance with the Guild’s Rules.

Display permits - applications made by the Guild on behalf of members.

The current display permit obtained by the Guild on behalf of participating members to present displays at our Monday meetings is due to expire in July, and therefore the Guild will be seeking a new one (please note that we will include in the application the names of those members who were included in the existing permit so they do not need to advise us. However if anyone in that group no longer wishes to be included please contact the Secretary on 9584 2907 by June 30 so that we can remove their names).

We are taking this opportunity to ask any members who would like to be included in the new permit to complete the attached form giving us permission to apply on their behalf and send it to us promptly. There is no charge attached – the Guild will pay the modest fee required by LSD.

If you want to be included, fill in the form and include your full name and address and the full numbers of your collectors licences. If you have more than one collectors licence, include both numbers. You do not need to include the number of your Antique Handgun Collectors Licence (if you have one) as display permits are not needed for pistols registered under an Antique Handgun Collectors Licence. But they are needed for the display of any guns (whether handguns or long arms) held under Category 1 or Category 2 collectors licences.

If granted, the permit will permit those named in it to display at the club premises at Eley Park on club display nights the guns they hold under the category 1 or category 2 Collectors Licences they had listed (so long as the licences remain current and they remain members of the Guild) for the currency of the permit, which may be a year or longer, depending on the outcome of our negotiations.

Note that we do not yet know all the terms of the permit which will apply to the Guild itself or to those whose names and collectors licence(s) are listed in any permit. When we do know and the permit has been granted, we will of course notify those members who have requested that they be included in the permit what those conditions are.

This is an excellent opportunity to obtain a display permit applicable to Guild meetings at Ely Park and it is free of charge to members. Apply now, so you can be included in the application. We have to make a group application so individuals need to apply NOW. Complete the form and post to the Guild at the address shown. (Only correctly completed forms which are actually received by the Guild will be acted on. Details of the permit if and when obtained will be posted to you at the address you have given in the form. Wait till you get it before displaying under it!).

Monday Themes

  • June, Guild Buy and Sell Night, (see article above)
  • July – AGM (see above) Free supper!
  • August – Flintlocks
  • September – Trench Art, also WW1 arms and items
  • October – Edged weapons, swords, bayonets, knives, spears etc.
  • November – Combined night with Vintagers (supper provided).

Help Brighten Up Monday Night Displays

We encourage those members who are individually named in the Guild’s Display Permit to take the opportunity to make use of it. It covers all the firearms held on the Collectors licence(s) they listed. Members who have items registered to an Antique Handgun Collectors Licence do not need a permit to display these, so to increase the variety at our Monday nights bring some of them along.

Collectors Display Permits do not apply to items held under A & B licences. However, such items must not be possessed, carried or used other than in accordance with any licence conditions and the Firearms Act, (and must not be exposed or offered for sale, other than by a licensed dealer- which is why we are holding the June Guild Buy and Sell Night through the good offices of dealer Roly Martyn).

Display Permits also do not apply to Exempt Firearms such as pre 1900 manufactured single barrelled muzzle-loading pistols, or pre 1900 manufactured longarms (which are either muzzle-loading or take ammunition which is no longer commercially available). Guild Displays are of course not limited to firearms. There is always a lot of interest in displays of militaria, edged weapons, items relating to wars or battles involving Australians and other historical matters of interest to members.

    Licence Renewals and PTAs

Just a reminder that all you need to do to have the Guild sign them as the Act requires is send them with the information required by Registry to the Guild at PO Box 2976, Cheltenham, 3192. Enclose a stamped addressed envelope to Registry and we will sign it and send it on for you.

20th Eureka Collectables and Militaria Fair

This will be held at the Woolshed Exhibition Centre, Western Highway Ballarat on the 11th of July from 9.30am to 4.00 pm. There will be free entry for anyone wearing full military uniform but if you aren’t then the admission price is $7.00 for adults. There are no concession prices but there is free admission for children under 16.

For details contact the Secretary of the Ballarat Arms and Militaria Collectors Society on (03) 5342 4433 or Google BAAMCs for online booking.
